Avena Sativa – wild oats – is very widely cultivated throughout all major continents.
In temperate climates it is usually a summer crop; in sub – tropical and Mediterranean conditions it is grown in the cool season; in the tropics it is grown at altitude.
On the Indian subcontinent oats are grown in the foothills of the Himalayas.
It is descended from a weed which grew in the Fertile Crescent (a region spreading from Israel to western Iran) to Europe. It was domesticated about 3,000 years ago, in the wetter, colder conditions of Europe, in which oats thrive.
