Male Impotence Common in Australia
Male impotence affects one in five Australian men over the age of 40, according to a 2005 study published in The Lancet medical journal. And one in ten cannot get any erection at all.
Two Types of Male Impotence
Impotence Australia defines two types of male impotence:
Primary Male Impotence: a man has never had successful intercourse with a partner but may achieve normal erections in other situations.
Secondary Male Impotence: has current impotence problems but has successfully completed intercourse in the past.
The good news is 95 per cent of impotence in men is treatable. Sometimes it’s as easy as taking an oral drug or herbal supplement like Herbal Ignite; some cases may require technical intervention (injections or pumps) or sexual health counselling.
Occasional Male Impotence Normal
It is normal for men to experience occasional male impotence as the result of:
- Stress
- Tiredness
- Anxiety
- Excessive alcohol
- Drug consumption

Increase of Time Between Erections
Most men do not know that the average time taken to get a second erection after orgasm – the refractory period – steadily increases with age.
A 15-year-old may be able to have a second orgasm within five minutes, for a man in his late 20s it may be 15 – 30 minutes and for a man of 50 it might require many hours or even days.
The lengthening of the refractory period is a natural occurrence of aging, and is not the same as male impotence – the inability to get an erection because of lack of blood flow or other causes.
Left to nature, a man usually cannot get an erection during this refractory period; however even if he gets an erection with assistance from impotence pills or direct stimulation he will not reach another orgasm during the refractory period.
Possible Signs of Impotence in Men
Changes in the way the penis responds become obvious from ages 40 to 50 including:
- May require physical stimulation either from man or partner
- May not get as full or firm as before
- Easier to lose hardness
- Once hardness lost may be more difficult to regain
- Angle of erection may point slightly down rather than straight up
- Need for orgasm is less
- Ejaculation force less
- Amount ejaculated is less
In ages 60s and 70s
Changes of previous decade more pronounced
- Often takes longer to ejaculate
- May not ejaculate every time
- Accept ‘ejaculation every second or third time is fine’ – therapist Bernie Zilbergeld.
